Katherine Shaw is our new Eco Champion.
As a club, Builth and District Running Club strives to reduce its impact on the environment by encouraging best environmental practice amongst members. We are extremely grateful to Katherine Shaw for taking on the role as ‘Eco Champ’. The brief is to keep reminding us about all we can do, as a club, to reduce our carbon footprint.
Kit and Running Shoes: Running shoes are hard to recycle due to the variety of material used in construction. We will offer a collection point for unneeded shoes. The shoes will be sent to JOGON (https://www.jogonagain.com/) to be distributed to people in need, both in the UK and abroad. We will set up a regular collection point at our club social night. We will also approach the organisers of the Groe Parkrun to set up a collection point there.
We are looking into options for excess kit; a regular ‘bring and buy’ kit swap, an inventory of excess club kit, a possible loan scheme and a partnership with a charity or CIC which repurposes end-of-life kit like ReRun, Runagain or Kitsquad.
Consider using an ethical and sustainable kit supplier for your training kit or look into buying second-hand.
Our club vests and t-shirts are already sourced from the Charity Clothing Company.

Medals: we will look into options for making our medals for the Resolution Race and Hill Billy sustainable by reducing the use of plastics and virgin materials in their manufacture.
Options are available for recycled metals, FSC wood, compostable medals and we will
support local businesses to reduce transport emissions where possible.
Travel: We will promote clinics and workshops at local hubs to cut down on members
travelling long distances for services.
Transport: We will encourage car sharing or public transport where
possible.
We have found a very good Sports Massager in Cardiff Gait. Instead of sending all our runners down to Cardiff, we bring Graham and his table up to Builth Wells.
Our Races: We will strive to reduce the amount of single-use plastic at our events and to offer recycling facilities.
Leave No Trace: NEVER discard used gel sachets or other litter when training or racing, always pack it away and dispose of it in a bin once you are finished. We encourage our members to pick up rubbish and dispose of it correctly if they see it on a run. https://www.runnersagainstrubbish.org/
We are a paperless club. We have moved all our sign on forms, communications and race entries online.
Future Suggestions:
Consider Athletics for a Better World certification for events
Reusable, folding cups to entrants of our races instead of medals.
Organise a regular environmental event, for example a litter pick run/walk
